Setting a Bad Example

LAST NIGHT, in this same internet shop, I happened to sit beside a middle-aged woman and a little boy. I figured they were chatting with somebody. I thought they were talking to the woman’s husband who might be working abroad. But I was wrong.

It was the child, about 12 years old, who was typing the messages for the woman. There were some English words that they couldn’t understand, which I volunteered to translate for them.

Later on, they received a message from the person on the other end of the line that said: “Show me your ass.”

They asked me what it meant. Before I translated it, I looked at the mother in the eye, wanting to ask her, “Are you sure you want your child to see how that caucasian makes a fool of you?”

After I told them what it meant, the kid said, “Ma, talikod na.” (Ma,  turn around.) The woman did.

I felt enraged.  In my mind I was asking myself, “What kind of mother is this woman beside me?”

A little later, more videos were popping up the screen. Suddenly, there was a video of a man who was about to show his manhood on cam. Laughing, the woman covered that portion of the screen and asked the boy to close it.

The owner of the internet shop told the woman to take a picture of herself and post it on social networking sites to attract foreigners. She also told the woman to prefer older men to young men. Most of the younger men, she said,  do not have money.  They are just looking for Filipinas who willingly take off their clothes on cam. They won’t send you dollars. It was like the owner of the shop was giving her a tutorial.

What on earth is happening to these women?

I didn’t wonder when I’ve read in Paolo Coelho’s Eleven Minutes and Michael Chrichton’s Next) Filipina prostitutes as characters.

On TV Patrol SOCSKSARGEN this afternoon, there was feature on the law that protects Filipina women from abuse through schemes like online dating, where Filipinas are matched to foreigners.

The case of the woman who was seated beside me last night is different. She was the one taking the risk. She even made his son an active participant in the risk-taking.

Things like this really make me sad. I wish I could do something.

*I once wrote poem of this theme before. It’s found on my old poetry site.

It’s rampant and boy, when all hell breaks loose, they have nothing left to turn on to but the internet.

I bet that woman was a hopeless case.

The woman still has many choices, Sheng. The internet is definitely not the last straw.

It’s normal you know. I mean, normal na may mga ganung ginagawa. Pero nakakashock pa rin lalo na kapag woman ang subject. Baka for fun lang yun sa isip nila. Wow, charge to experience owner ng internet cafe. Pornographic viewing is not allowed nga o ni-required yun na i-post sa internet shops.

There are great opportunities you will find online pero huwag lang yun. Tayo nga nagi-earn thru blogging at hindi naghuhubad. One time nga, nagtanong yung taga bank. They wondered kung panu ako nagkapera sa internet. Tapos, they wondered panu ba naman ang nagpadala sa akin sarili ko at pinadala ko sa sarili ko. Sabi ko, naghuhubad ako sabay tawa ng matipid. Then I explained the real situation.

Thanks for the comment, Redlan. Yeah, magkakapit-lugar lang kami ni Sheng.

By the way, the real issue there is having his innocent son take part in what she was doing.

That is the point, Sir Hecky. Thanks for your comment.

The other shops here had been closed already. I have talked to one of the barangay kagawads here about this matter. He said he’ll bring it up sa committee nya.

There are worse scenarios than this pa Ayel na very rampant diyan. I used to own an internet shop when I was still there and we have customers na mga bakla na they will dress up parang babae and then may mga bf na mga puti and the ask money, the shocking thing is, napapaniwala nila itong mga foreigners at pinapadalhan din sila ng money…whenever na may alam ako na ganito I told them na nakakasira talaga sa image nating mga Pinoy yong ganito, maraming foreigners nang naloko at nagkakaroon ng thinking na manloloko ang mga Pinay! May alam pa ako isang married woman, ka konsabo niya pa husband niya para lang makaloko ng puti, talagang very degrading sa image nating mga Pinoy, pati yong mga mabuti eh nadadamay…very frustrating talaga!!

Thanks for your comment, Amie. I am aware of that, too. I am really saddened about what is happening in our town. They’re really rampant. I always warn my students about these realities. I am glad that three bars here had been closed down–they, too, aren’t good examples for the kids here.

Buti na lang I don’t see them around na. I see less of those people na rin. At least dito sa cafe na ‘to. I dunno. Baka lumipat sa ibang cafe.

Nakakaawa yung babae. Nakakaawa dahil siguro she was forced to do that because of her current situation. But mas nakakaawa kasi she had to take such kind of risk. Grabeh naman…
