My Hometown Will Soon Become a City

Alabel, Sarangani Province

I HAVE been contemplating to write a post about this two weeks ago but I had been very busy (an understatement) so I’m writing about it only now.

It’s true, our municipal officials, led by our Vice-Mayor Vic Paul Salarda, are preparing the necessary documents for our town’s cityhood. Two weeks ago, it was officially announced at the municipal hall. They are seeing to it that before the the congress opens this November, all the documents shall have been submitted.

There is no question about Alabel being qualified as a city. Even the Mayor of the nearby General Santos City agrees with it. On TV, he said that in terms of income, land area, and population, Alabel is ready to become a city.

So am I excited about it? Amused is more apt, I guess.

I roamed around to see if the place is really ready to become a city. The public market, a mega-market according to the signboard, is still under construction.

It’s big and new establishments open week after week there. In somehow shows that there’s quite a promise. Overall, here’s what I found our town lacks:

1. A hospital – we all have to run to GenSan to find a hospital

2. A drainage system — you know, it always floods here

3. A unified public transport terminal — all the jeepneys and multicabs in our town all goes to GenSan, the only one route, but there exists several terminals that move from one place to another

4. A wharf — we have a power plant here that runs on oil but there is nowhere for the tanker to dock

Probably, there’s more that our town has to have. Maybe when it becomes a city and receives a bigger allocation from the government, it can afford to put up such installations.

I’m still studying the pros and cons of our town’s becoming a city.

Pero boto ako kung sa ining paagiha mas molambo ang Alabel, then lets hope and pray for this move by our local officials led by vice Salarda to succeed…….afterall kita ra man pod nga taga Alabel ang maka benepisyo ani di ba?

My parents are from Alabel, and many of my relatives are mostly in the agri business, my cousin was once a #1 councilor of Alabel…I spent many summers there as a kid kasi my parents have a farm there. So I am proud to see how it has grown from what it was 20 years ago…
