Off To School On Two Wheels — An Eco-Friendly, Health-Friendly, and Pocket-Friendly Means of Transportation
WHAT A mouthful! I haven’t written a title longer than that.
I just would like to share with you that starting today, I will go to school, which is about 3 kilometers from home, on my new bicycle — the bicycle that blogging bought. I bought it last Saturday and had some practice until Sunday evening. Now, I could feel pain on my back and my legs. But I’m sure, I will get used to this.
But why did I decide to buy a bicycle aside from that I can’t afford a motorcycle?
My brother have always compelled me purchase a motorcycle. But I am afraid that it would cost me a lot. With the ever increasing prices of petroleum products, transportation cost, consequently, rises as well. Cycling to school is my way of tightening my belt in these tough times.
Not only can I save money, I can also help save the Earth. Instead of relying on energy from non-renewable resources like petroleum, I opt to use the chemical energy I get from food to provide the mechanical energy needed to capacitate the bicycle to take me to school. That way, I don’t contribute to the ever increasing amount of harmful emissions that our mother earth unwillingly receives each day.
Cycling to school would now be my way of exercising my body. Although it would take me a little longer to reach the school than to commute, the benefit I get from it offsets the very little time I “lose.”
This afternoon, I went home with two other students who also decided to ride their bikes to school.
Update: Two fellow teachers have joined me.
*I got the photo above from http://www1.surreycc.gov.uk, the official website of the County Council of Surrey in London. They have a very commendable program that ensures the safety of their students who are cycling to school. I’m looking at the possibility of replicating it here.
