MBS 1, A Huge Success!

Ayel

A FORMIDABLE?force of about a hundred bloggers from Davao and other parts of Mindanao came together for the first ever Mindanao Bloggers Summit?at the NCCC Mall, Davao City, yesterday.

The event was not merely a meet-up?where bloggers simply bond with each other, share stories and tips, and bring home freebies. It was different in the sense that it had a?relevant and noble aim: Blogging for Culture, Identity, and Understanding. Aware of the negative conotation about the island insinuated by the mainstream media’s coverage of the isolated conflicts in Mindanao, blogging is seen as an alternative medium, which will promote the true identity of?Mindanao and its peoples. Through our blogs, we can help make our fellow Mindanaoans?aware of our own culture and?others understand our ways.

When I arrived at the venue, Bob Martin of Mindanao.com (and 150 other sites!) was showing the pictures he took of his travels to different places in Mindanao including Isla Parilla in my hometown, Alabel, Sarangani Province. Doesn’t he just love Mindanao! He had been to almost every corner of this part of the country!

Later on, Fr. Albert Allejo, SJ presented the history and culture of the major groups of peoples inhabiting Mindanao. From his talk, I gained a different perspective at understanding Mindanao. Kim Castillo talked about “being an ‘emo blogger’ without betraying your niche.” Pro-bloggers Jayvee Fernandez and Marc Macalua both shared their expertise in monetizing?blogs.

Abe Olandres of Yugatech.com, together with other A-List bloggers answered questions from tyro bloggers like me regarding the many things we want to learn about blogging but most of the questions revolved around earning from this wonderful activity.

Bloggers also got the chance to promote their blogs during the event. Web hostings, domain names, IBM pens, think pads, and ID clips, Google shirts, and bags, and other freebies were given away.

Bloggers from outside Davao like me, Aethen, Mikko, Richard,?Marco, and others, also bonded with the generous and wonderful Kuya Blogie, who gave us a treat. Charles was our phototographer. He was the one who took the pictures I placed in this post.

I went home happy and inspired to keep blogging.

Now, I would like to thank everyone I met in the congress who were all nice and wonderful.
